The motanka is a traditional Slavic doll with deep roots in Ukrainian culture. The word “motanka” comes from the Ukrainian verb “motaty”, which means “to roll up”. This technique of winding and tying fabrics is the basis for making these unique dolls.
The absence of a face was not a defect, but a gesture of protection. It was believed that by not giving the doll a face, evil spirits would not be able to take possession of it and, consequently, could not bring harm to those who owned it.
Mothers made the dolls for their children, transmitting protection and love to them. Brides received them as wedding presents, bringing the blessing of the old generations to their new homes. And travelers took them with them as talismans, asking them to guide them on their journeys.
Today, these dolls enchant people all over the world, who see them as symbols of love, hope and connection with their roots.
